In October, 1994, Wellness Centers were opened at the Mt. Hope Middle and High
Schools. The Wellness Center Project was developed through a West Virginia Bureau of
Public Health grant and the collaborative efforts of the New River Health Association,
the Mt. Hope Middle and High Schools and the Pressley Ridge School.
Over the years since that modest beginning, this project has expanded. We now provide
Well-Child Services at area elementary schools and have School-Based Wellness Centers at
the following schools:
Collins Middle School.
Mt. Hope High School.
Mt. Hope Middle School.
Nuttall Middle School.
Oak Hill High School.
Wellness Centers offer students acute health care, follow-up care for chronic
conditions, student health assessments, sports physicals, mental health counseling
and dental care. Access to these services is open to all students with a signed
consent from their parents. Consent forms can be picked up in the school office
at both the middle and high schools. Third-party billing services are provided
for students with insurance coverage. Those students without insurance will be
provided with services free of charge.
Medical services are provided by physicians and physician assistants who are
employed by New River Health Association. Mental health counseling is provided at
each school.
We hope in the near future to expand this program to other schools in the region
as well. We feel these Wellness Centers provide a much-needed source of care and
support to area students.
